Reckling to host Unlock Michigan petition event
Meghan Reckling, candidate for 47th district state representative, will be hosting a Sign the Unlock Michigan Petition event on Friday, July 31st, from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.
“No politician, regardless of their party affiliation, should have the power to issue over 150 executive orders unilateral running our state with no accountability to our elected representatives, no public input and no end in sight,” Reckling stated. “The unlimited power Governor Whitmer is wielding flies in the face of our Constitution and the protective foundations built upon three separate and equal branches of government,” she said.
The “Unlock Michigan” ballot initiative would repeal the Emergency Powers of Governor Act of 1945. The governor would still have certain powers under the 1976 Emergency Management Act, which requires approval from the Legislature every 28 days to extend a “state of emergency.”
The petition states the following: “An initiation of legislation to repeal the Emergency Powers of Governor Act, 1945 PA 302, MCL 10.31 to 10.33, entitled ‘An act authorizing the governor to proclaim a state of emergency, and to prescribe the powers and duties of the governor with respect thereto; and to prescribe penalties’”.
In addition to signing the “Unlock Michigan” petition, residents of the 47th district will have the opportunity to meet Meghan one-on-one and ask her any questions they may have before the August 4th primary election.
“Many residents agree that COVID-19 is still a problem; however, they do not support the governor’s unbridled use of ruling by decree. And they are growing frustrated that she continues to show an unwillingness to work with the Legislature, which is having a disastrous effect on our personal lives,” Reckling said.
The event is free to attend and will be held in the west end of the parking lot of Target located at 10025 E. Highland Road, Hartland, MI. Safety precautions will be followed.
